Do You Need a Visa for the UK?

Entry requirements for the United Kingdom vary significantly by nationality. The type of travel document you need depends on your country of citizenship, the purpose and length of your visit, and whether you are entering for tourism, business, study, or work.

The UK operates three main entry categories for short-term visitors:

  • 1. Visa-free entry – Citizens of certain countries may enter without any prior documentation for short stays
  • 2. UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) – Required from 2025 for many visa-free nationals
  • 3. Standard Visitor Visa – Required for nationals of countries not covered by the above

ℹ What is the UK ETA?

The UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) is a new digital travel permission introduced by the UK government. It is required for visitors from countries that do not need a visa to travel to the UK, but who are not British or Irish citizens.

The ETA is linked electronically to your passport – you do not receive a physical stamp or sticker. It must be obtained before you travel to the UK.

Who Needs an ETA?

Nationals of many countries including those from North America, Europe (non-EU), Australia, New Zealand, and others who previously entered without documentation.

How to Apply

Applications are made online through the UK ETA app or official UK government website. You will need a valid passport, photo, and email address.

Cost & Validity

The ETA costs £10 per application. Once granted, it is valid for multiple trips to the UK over a 2-year period or until your passport expires.

Entry Requirements FAQ

Most tourists can stay in the UK for up to 6 months on a single visit. If you are entering visa-free or with an ETA, you may visit multiple times, but each stay must not exceed 6 months.

Your passport must be valid for the duration of your stay in the UK. Unlike some countries, the UK does not require 6 months validity beyond your stay date. However, if your passport is close to expiry, it is advisable to renew before travelling.

Travel insurance is not a legal requirement to enter the UK, but it is strongly recommended. Healthcare in the UK can be expensive for visitors. Comprehensive travel insurance should cover medical expenses, trip cancellation, and personal belongings.

No. A Standard Visitor Visa or ETA does not permit you to work in the UK. If you intend to work, study for more than 6 months, or settle in the UK, you will need to apply for the appropriate visa category.

Prohibited items include certain firearms and weapons, controlled drugs, offensive materials, endangered animal products, and agricultural products from non-EU countries. There is no duty-free allowance for tobacco and alcohol beyond specified limits.
