Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in London
Arrive at London Heathrow or Gatwick. Transfer to your centrally located hotel. Afternoon orientation walk along the Thames Embankment. Welcome briefing – your heritage guide provides an overview of the extraordinary 5,000-year journey you are about to take through England's south.
Day 2: Windsor Castle & Eton
Morning drive to Windsor Castle – founded by William the Conqueror in the 11th century, it is the oldest and largest occupied castle in the world and the weekend home of the Royal Family. Your guide leads an in-depth tour of the State Apartments (when open), St George's Chapel (the burial place of ten monarchs including Henry VIII and Elizabeth II), and the Queen Mary's Dolls' House – the world's most elaborate miniature house. Afternoon stroll through the historic streets of Eton, home of the famous public school.
Day 3: Oxford University
Full day in the City of Dreaming Spires. Guided walking tour of Oxford University's oldest colleges including the magnificent Christ Church (whose Great Hall was the model for Hogwarts' Great Hall), the medieval Merton College, and the Gothic splendour of Magdalen College with its celebrated deer park. Visit the circular Bodleian Library – one of the oldest and most magnificent libraries in the world. Punt on the River Cherwell in the afternoon.
Day 4: Stonehenge & Salisbury
Drive to the Salisbury Plain for the morning visit to Stonehenge – one of the world's most famous and mysterious prehistoric monuments (UNESCO World Heritage Site). Your specialist guide provides the full story of this 5,000-year-old wonder – its construction, its alignment with the summer solstice, and the theories about its purpose. Afternoon in the beautiful cathedral city of Salisbury, dominated by England's tallest medieval spire (123m). Visit the cathedral's chapter house which houses one of only four surviving originals of Magna Carta (1215).
Day 5: Avebury & New Forest
Morning at Avebury Stone Circle – less famous than Stonehenge but actually far larger, the world's largest prehistoric stone circle encompasses an entire village. Unlike Stonehenge, you can walk freely among the massive standing stones. Afternoon in the ancient New Forest – created by William the Conqueror in 1079 as a royal hunting ground. Walk through ancient woodland, spot the famous free-roaming ponies, and visit the charming village of Burley.
Day 6: Brighton & South Downs
Drive to the vibrant seaside city of Brighton – England's most eccentric and creative coastal city. Visit the extraordinary Royal Pavilion – an Indian-Gothic fantasy of a palace built for the Prince Regent, with an interior of Chinese Regency splendour. Explore the famous Lanes – a maze of narrow alleyways filled with antique shops, jewellers, and independent boutiques. Walk along the South Downs to Beachy Head – Britain's highest chalk sea cliff with stunning views across the English Channel to France on clear days.
Day 7: Canterbury & White Cliffs of Dover
Journey to Canterbury – the spiritual heart of the Anglican Communion. Guided tour of the magnificent Canterbury Cathedral (UNESCO World Heritage Site) – standing on the site where Archbishop Thomas Becket was murdered in 1170 on the orders of Henry II. Explore the medieval pilgrims' city of Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. Afternoon at the White Cliffs of Dover – Britain's most iconic natural landmark, rising 107m above the Strait of Dover with views across to the French coast.
Day 8: Leeds Castle & Kent Gardens
Morning at the exquisitely situated Leeds Castle in Kent – often described as "the loveliest castle in the world", set on two islands in a natural lake. The castle's 900-year history encompasses medieval queens, Tudor kings, and modern prime ministers' retreats. Afternoon at the world-famous Sissinghurst Castle Garden – created by Vita Sackville-West and Harold Nicolson in the 1930s, considered one of the finest gardens in England.
Day 9: Bath – Roman & Georgian Heritage
Drive to the incomparable City of Bath – the only city in Britain entirely designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Full day exploring the extraordinary Roman Baths – the best-preserved Roman spa complex in Britain, where hot spring water still rises at 46°C as it has for 10,000 years. Walk the magnificent Georgian architecture of the Royal Crescent, the Circus, and Pulteney Bridge – one of only a handful of bridges in the world with shops built upon it. Jane Austen lived in Bath; the Jane Austen Centre tells her story in the city she immortalised.
Day 10: Lacock & Return to London
Final morning at the beautifully preserved medieval village of Lacock – almost entirely owned by the National Trust, where filming has taken place for Pride and Prejudice, the BBC's adaptations of Cranford and Little Dorrit, and multiple Harry Potter films. Return to London for your departure flight with an extraordinary wealth of English history absorbed and experienced over ten remarkable days.
